…fantastic racing with historic cars
If you weren’t there you missed a great entertainment at the Historic Grand Prix Races on Saturday and Sunday May 8/9, 2010 in Monaco. “The Classic Grand Prix has a fascination that many more people would enjoy” says Peter Kimmel, host of the “Monaco Charity Terrace” …the beauty of the historic cars and their fine racing may find much higher interest if just the Media would broadcast it more intensely” Peter Kimmel and his wife Nataly hosted the viewing at the last Monaco Historic Grand Prix in 2008 with guests from Austria, Germany, Denmark, the US and Iceland. They all were watching the racing from their apartment right in the middle of the harbour line.
The beauty of the cars is stunning and seeing the historic formula 1 cars, like the famous Tyrell with its 6 wheels from1977 in this years group G, the revival of the decades when Lotus was a dominant player in F1 within the group B.
Group E brings back the memory of great racing
The sports-cars in group C, like the beautiful gull-wing Mercedes W 194, Jaguar C Type and the almost unknown Frazer-Nash Le Mans MK 2 – beautiful chassis and models for numerous great sports cars for the road.
The “voiturettes” in group A, with their long hoods from before 1947 on the Monaco track is delightful. Low security levels of these cars, many of the cars have no security belts, don’t hinder their drivers to race hard and drift through the Rascasse on thin tyres, sliding along closely to the side bars. Those were the times of the Maseratis, Bugattis Eras and Altas.
No matter which age of car, it becomes real exciting when the drivers get on track, put down the throttle and race with ultimate passion – a flashback of the times where changing positions happens at every lap and racing was more an adventure than a result of computed simulations and strategic pit stops!
The honour of being on the stairs in front of Palais Héracles (easy to watch from the Monaco-Charity Terrace) as winner or 2nd and 3rd with an equal ceremony as is in the Formula 1 is a desirable result for these pilots and requires a tough fight. We saw incredible fights until the very last meter of each race – some of the drivers have experienced the challenge of mastering these cars and crashed badly. In two races the security car has appeared twice in one contest and almost 70 % of the race was under yellow flag and the SC sign.
One of the most hilarious events of the weekend was the Ferrari Parade on Saturday, where the passion of drivers obviously went overboard, 4 of these beautiful Ferrari F1 cars were hooked in each other at the turn of the Fairmont Hotel (former Loews Hotel) after only a few laps! The parade was finished by the recovery of the different cars; however, on Sunday the Ferrari Parade went very well giving the spectators already a feeling of the real Formula 1 GP on May 20-23. Famous Jacky Ickx was leading the parade sponsored by Chopard with one of the Ferraris he once owned and drove.
The Ferrari cars were from 1952 to 2003, bringing back the cars from great drivers like Alberto Ascari, Jacky Jean Alesi, Gerhard Berger, Alain Prost, Niki Lauda, Clay Regazzoni and the newer generation of, Eddie Irvine, Rubens Barrichello and Michael Schumacher. (see the pictures)
